Self determination...por Marina Guajardo V.

Nature of human beings is completely volitional; at every single action taken there is a previous desire of success. When there exists motivation, there are great expectations that hopefully will approach after. Earnest Hemingway portrays through one of his masterpieces The Old man and the Sea the importance when desire, willing and self-determination are able to accomplish, when lead appropriately. Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois; his stay in Cuba provided him a wide and vivid description of Cuban society, which he perfectly portrays throughout this novel. Hemingway firmly believed in the thesis he developed in the novel, the main character, Santiago demonstrates the meaning of willpower and determination. As stated in Hemingway’s text, the degree of triumph will be in a close relation with a full sense of individual choice.
Santiago and old Cuban fisher man holds a three- day struggle with a marlin at the sea. Santiago was seen by the villagers as an old inefficient fisherman, who unfortunately had fallen in a long period without having any luck when fishing. When Santiago finds himself facing for what seemed at the beginning, an insignificant marlin, he understood the marlin represented the opportunity he had been expecting for so long. After time passed and the marlin revealed its resistance, Santiago understood that de was completely by his own at the immense sea, he no longer claimed for the company of Manolin.
Santiago’s physical abilities were not the same as several years ago; he reached the point of self-knowledge and decided to fight the marlin with all his strength and determination. Was until Santiago assimilated his position that he took everything he had learned and possessed through all his years of experience as a fisherman. The old’s man determination in the three-day battle with the marlin showed that even at the end when the marlin was destroyed by the sharks, he proves himself that pride an honor of achieving and realizing his greatest goal was worth it.
Santiago knows that “man is not made for defeat… man can be destroyed but not defeated” (Hemingway 56). This firm and courageous ideology kept motivating him, and even lead him to establish a profound relationship with the marlin. Consequently, Santiago apart from re-gaining self-determination, regained the respect from the village

Different meanings of self-determination have been given through years, but always reaching a common definition. Self-determination throughout history represents the base of amazing triumphs, and memorable events that made under a persistent and focused mind always succeeded. Success is the fair result of a hard working personality that forces itself to gain what is desperately seeks for. Bradbury easily proves this with his work Fahrenheit 451. He achieved happiness, or seemed to be in the way of reaching self-realization due to the meaning that his life was about to take with the decisions he had just taken:
“Sí, eso creo, aunque se lo único que crea. Tenía que suceder. Desde hace mucho tiempo sentía algo que se preparaba en mi interior, y yo andaba por ahí haciendo una cosa y sintiendo otra. Dios, todo estaba aquí adentro. Lo extraño es que no se trasluciera en mí, como la grasa. Y, ahora, estoy aquí, complicándome la vida.” (Bradbury 142)

As stated by the doctor “To be self-determined is to endorse one’s actions at the highest level of reflection. When self-determined people experience a sense of freedom to do what it is interesting, personally important, and vitalizing”. This affirmation is completely accurate, since the only way of achieving a sense of freedom is by means of achieving what is really important for every individual. When things are imposed, there can not be the pleasure of enjoying one’s election. Oscar Wilde, made clearer this affirmation, in The Profundis Wilde completely expressed his feelings at jail, by means of this letter. After, several and profound reflections, he declared that self-realization motivated him during that harsh period. He was determined to achieve real actions for his life, and begin with a new attitude:

“Nothing seems to me of the smallest value except what one gets out of oneself. My nature is seeking a fresh mode of self-realization. That is all I am concerned with……There is much more before me. I have hills far steeper to climb, valleys much darker to pass through. And I have to get it all out of myself. Neither religion, morality, nor reason can help me at all “(Wilde 5)

When people are completely sure and confident on their objective there are no obstacles in the way of success. Everything is managed by the power of mind, and the wishes of self-superacion, directly preceded by self-determination. The way of our live is marked by the decisions taken, and the way they are managed. Self determination leads our decisions to a degree of realization.
